About the artist
Born in Pondicherry, K. Janakiraman began his artistic journey with an interest in realistic painting. He later became deeply influenced by abstract expression, leading to a significant transformation in his practice. During the late 1990s and until 2001, Janakiraman created a striking body of large-scale abstract paintings characterised by a surreal, dreamlike quality. Moving beyond visible reality, these works explore inner landscapes and the space between form and formlessness. Their monumental scale adds to their immersive quality, inviting the viewer to experience rather than simply observe. His paintings have been exhibited in major cities across India and have found their way into collections and exhibitions both in India and abroad. The works in the collection belong to this important period of his practice. They may be seen as expressions of an inner movement- the aspiration to move beyond the familiar towards new dimensions of perception and experience. Janakiraman continues to evolve as an artist and now works primarily in watercolour, embracing a more fluid and subtle language of expression.
