About the artist

Usha Patel

Usha Patel came to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1944, at the age of nine, and grew up within its educational and artistic environment. She studied under Ashram artists Krishnalal Bhatt and Jayantilal, who had trained at Shantiniketan under the renowned artist Nandalal Bose. Her artistic journey was closely connected with The Mother, who viewed many of her paintings, offered guidance and gave titles to some of her works. For her, painting became a means of inner exploration rather than simply an expression of the outer world. In 1970, inspired by Sri Aurobindo's book The Mother and with The Mother's encouragement, she began a remarkable series of 144 watercolour paintings expressing the inner states evoked by the text. The series was later published as a book. Characterised by luminous colour, symbolic forms and abstract or semi-abstract compositions, her paintings seek to express states of consciousness and inner experience. Her work reflects the Ashram's understanding of art as a path of inner discovery, making her an important voice in its artistic heritage.
